Takeaway packaging that’s naturally better

Notpla food packaging looks, feels, and works like traditional packaging - but without the plastic or hidden toxins. Instead, it's lined with our unique seaweed coating: grease-resistant, naturally biodegradable, and completely free from PFAs. It's the natural choice for food businesses that want single-use without the waste.
The first truly plastic-free solution
Notpla is the first coating to emerge as truly plastic-free. In 2023, the Dutch government officially recognised Notpla's patented material as the first and only one to meet the EU's rigorous Single Use Plastic Directive standards for being truly plastic-free.

Solving packaging’s dirty secrets
Most takeaway boxes have a secret that's hiding in plain sight - they're lined lined with plastic, bioplastics or toxic PFAs. While they do a good job of keeping the grease and moisture from your food from leaking, these synthetic materials will outlast your meal by hundreds of years and are causing real harm to the health of the planet and us humans.
But this is something we can fix.

Want to check if your current packaging is SUPD compliant?
Here's three questions to ask your supplier in order to side-step greenwashing:
1. Ask for a technical data-sheet that shows the complete layer structure of the product, from base substrate through to the surface coating.
2. Can you provide test documentation that identify which specific component delivers the barrier functions?
3. If you use natural polymers for barrier protection, please provide third-party verification confirming these materials remain in their original unmodified state.
Disappears, just like that

Notpla packaging regenerates into fertile soil, decomposing naturally in home composts, becoming food for worms, fungi, and microbes. Watch as all the PLA (a bioplstic) coated board fails to disappear, leaving behind the plastic coating laminated onto the cardboard surface which will go on to be broken down into microplastics.

Yes. Notpla is 100% natural, derived only from seaweed and is non-chemically modified, meaning it sits outside of the EU's Single-use Plastic Directive definition of plastic. Notpla Coating is currently the only coating on the market to have been verified by an EU government as meeting this criteria.
No. We do not use PFAs or any other forever chemicals and are happy to show you a copy of our ISEGA lab report result to confirm it.
Yes, Notpla has been certified as EN13430 compliant and will not contaminate standard paper waste streams.
Unfortunately, much of the packaging used today will not be recycled or reach composting. If Notpla materials are littered, they will still biodegrade naturally just like a piece of seaweed on the beach and - unlike plastic, bioplastic or PFAS - will not release microplastics or forever chemicals into nature.
No, Notpla Coating contains no allergens.
Yes, a bespoke printing service is available with MOQs from just 50k units. With everything being designed here in London, it can take as little as 4-6 weeks from artwork sign-off to production. Email customerservice@notpla.com for more info.
